Roofing in Jamestown
Jamestown sits almost entirely on Conanicut Island, the second-largest island in Narragansett Bay, with bridges to North Kingstown on one side and Newport on the other. Almost every home on the island is close to the water, and wind off the bay can hit from any direction.
Jamestown became a summer destination after steam ferry service to Newport began in the 1870s, and the 1880s and 1890s brought a building boom of summer homes. Some of those houses are still standing, and others started as seasonal cottages and were later made year-round, so their framing and attic ventilation can be a mixed bag.
Salt air and steady wind are hard on roofs. Shingle edges, ridge caps, flashing and fasteners on the exposed side of the house wear out first, and storms can strip them quickly.
Working on an island also takes planning. We schedule materials and dumpsters around the bridges and the island’s narrow roads.
