Barrington Roofs: An East Bay Town Surrounded by Water
Barrington is a mostly residential town on the East Bay, a short drive southeast of Providence. Brickmaking and a railroad to Providence in the 1800s started its growth as a suburb, and the baby boom after World War II filled in much of the rest. The result is a mix of older homes near the town center and a lot of postwar neighborhoods.
Water is never far away. Narragansett Bay and the Barrington and Warren rivers wrap much of the town, and neighborhoods like Nayatt and Rumstick sit right on the shore. Homes there take wind and salt air off the water, which is hard on shingle edges, ridge caps and metal flashing.
Inland, neighborhoods like Hampden Meadows and the streets around the town center are full of colonials, capes and ranches, often with big trees overhead. Shade and moss, worn shingles and older attic venting are the usual issues there.
