Roofing in Charlestown
Charlestown stretches along Rhode Island’s south shore between Westerly and South Kingstown, and more than a third of the town’s area is water. Along the coast, beaches like East Beach and the Charlestown Breachway sit in front of large salt ponds, and Quonochontaug is in the town’s southwest corner.
Homes near the shore take wind and salt air off Block Island Sound. Many of them started as summer cottages and were later made year-round, so their framing and attic ventilation can be uneven. Shingle edges, ridge caps and flashing on the exposed side of the house wear out first.
North of the shore, the town turns quiet and wooded, up to the village of Carolina on the northern border. Shade, moss and branches are the usual roof trouble there, along with roofs that stay damp after storms.
Charlestown gets busy from May through October. If you’re thinking about a roof on a seasonal home, it helps to plan the work around when you’ll be there.
