Chimney Flashing Repair
Where a chimney comes through the roof, metal flashing has to bridge the gap between the masonry and the shingles. Step flashing is woven in with the shingles along the sides, and counter flashing set into the chimney covers it. When either one loosens, cracks or rusts, water runs right in.
A lot of chimney leaks we see have been ‘fixed’ before with a bead of caulk or tar. That might hold for a season, but it usually fails again. We remove the failed flashing and install new flashing the right way, tied into the shingles and the chimney.
Flashing is our job. If the chimney’s bricks, mortar or crown need work, that’s a job for a mason, and we’ll tell you if we see it.

Rhode Island weather
Weather is behind most of the problems we hear about.
🌬️
Wind off Narragansett Bay and the South County shore can lift and peel shingles loose.
🌧️
Wind-driven rain looks for any gap, especially at flashing around chimneys, walls and vents.
🧊
Snow that melts on a warm roof and refreezes at the cold eaves can back water up under the shingles.
🌊
Near the coast, salt spray is hard on exposed metal like flashing and fasteners.

We repair the flashing where the chimney meets the roof. Bricks, mortar, the crown and the inside of the chimney are a job for a mason.
Sealant alone usually fails again. If the flashing is sound, a small repair may be enough. If it has failed, we replace it.
Yes. A new roof is the right time for new flashing at the chimney, walls and vents.
