Roofing in Coventry

Coventry Roofs: Mill Villages in the East, Woods and Farms in the West

Coventry is the largest town in Rhode Island by land area, and it feels like two towns in one. The east side grew up around 19th-century textile mills in villages like Anthony, Washington, Quidnick and Harris, and many of the old village centers are still intact. You’ll find two-family mill workers’ houses there alongside larger homes built for the people who ran the mills.

Older houses like these have often been re-roofed more than once. Before we talk about price, we look at how many layers are up there, how the decking holds up, and how the chimney and wall flashing have been patched over the years.

Most of Coventry’s growth came after World War II, when the population climbed fast and neighborhoods of capes, ranches and raised ranches filled in around Tiogue, Coventry Centre and the shores of Johnson’s Pond. Plenty of those homes are now due for their second or third roof.

Head west toward Greene, Summit and Hopkins Hollow and the town turns rural, with 18th- and 19th-century farmhouses on wooded lots. Out there the usual trouble is shade, moss, falling limbs and roofs that stay damp long after a storm.
