Roofing in North Kingstown
North Kingstown’s homes tell the town’s history pretty clearly. Wickford grew into a busy seaport in the 1700s, and its harbor-side streets are still lined with very old houses. Along the rivers, the 1800s brought textile mill villages like Lafayette, Hamilton, Belleville and Davisville, with rows of modest worker housing that many families still live in today.
In 1938 the Quonset/Davisville military complex went up almost overnight, and the town grew fast around it. Around the same time, summer cottage colonies like Saunderstown, Mount View, Plum Beach and Barber Heights sprang up where farms had been. Over the decades most of those cottages became year-round homes, and the town filled in with capes, ranches and colonials.
Each of those groups ages differently on top. Wickford’s old houses often have steep roofs, tight valleys and chimneys that need careful flashing. Mill-village homes can have several layers of old roofing and decking that’s seen better days. Former cottages may have been added onto more than once, which leaves awkward roof joints where an addition meets the original house.
Much of the town sits right on Narragansett Bay. Homes in Quidnessett, Plum Beach, Saunderstown and around Wickford Harbor see more wind and salt air than houses inland. After a storm, those exposed edges and ridges are the first places we look.
